Saruta Cave Adventure

猿田洞の探険

夏に涼しい所に行きたいよね？川とか海などの所。今年、私がまた違う涼しい所に行った、洞窟の中へ。実は猿田洞はこれで二回目だった。今回小学生と一緒に抜けたから、子供の楽しみで一回目よりもっとおもしろくなった。龍が洞も抜けたことあるので、残りの伊尾木洞抜けたら満足になると思う。

Everyone likes to visit cool places in the summer right?  Like rivers or the beach.  This year I went to a cool place of a different variety, into a cave!  This was actually my second trip into Saruta cave.  This time I went with a group of elementary school students though, and since kids love caves and scary dark places, it made my trip all the more fun.  I have also been through Ryugadou so the only Kochi cave I have left that I want to visit is Ioki cave in Aki.

Karaoke

As planned, during Golden Week I hiked Yokokura-san and Kokuzo-san.  I'm making good progress in my plans of hiking all the mountains with trails in Kochi Prefecture.  In other news, I've been trying to learn more Japanese songs to sing at Karaoke.  I sing a lot of English songs and especially like Disney, but I want to branch out.  So far I've been trying to sing 上を向いて歩こう, 夢の中へ, 残酷な天使のテーゼ, and 初めてのチュウ.  夢の中へ aside, these are all songs I've heard my Japanese friends or other ALTs sing several times.  I don't listen to a lot of Japanese music, but I want to practice.  So if you have any recommendations please tell me!  Easy to sing songs with catchy rhythms are probably the best.

予定どおりゴールデンウィークの間、横倉山と虚空蔵山を登った。高知県のすべての歩道ある山を登る予定が順調だ。他のことでは、最近カラオケ行く時、もっと日本語の歌を歌えるようになりたいと思っている。ディズニーなどの英語の歌はよく歌うけど、広げたいと思っている。今まで歌ってみたのは「上を向いて歩こう」、「夢の中へ」、「残酷な天使のテーゼ」と「初めてのチュウ」だ。「夢の中へ」以外は日本人の友達か他のALTが何度も歌ったから、ちょっと分かってきた。私はあまり日本語の音楽を聞かないけど、練習したい。だから、おすすめの曲があれば、ぜひ教えてね！簡単な耳に残るのは一番だと思う。

I love exercise.  Like many Americans I like many activities: hiking of course, swimming, jogging, biking, bouldering, doing body weight workouts, surfing, and yoga.  I recently learned how to breathe properly when swimming the crawl, since then I've been going to the Shie and other swimming pools to practice.  So far in Kochi I've hiked Ishizuchi-san, Kajigamori, Naruyama, and Otakiyama.  I plan to hike Yokokura-san and Kokuzo-san soon.  I also hiked Mount Fuji while I was in Tokyo, though I didn't enjoy hiking up the crowded, volcanic rock trail very much.  I started bouldering since I came to Kochi and go to a gym in Kochi called Stone 0 once every few weeks.  How do you like to exercise?  I'm interested in trying new things so please tell me!

 私は運動が大好きだ。多くアメリカ人のようにたくさんのことが好きだ。その中からハイキングはもちろんで、水泳もランニングもサイクリングもボルダリングも体重での筋トレもサーフィンもヨーガもする。この間クロールをちゃんと泳げるようになってから、よく高知市の市営とか、ほかのプールに泳ぎに行っている。今まで高知県内では石鎚山とかじが森と成山と大滝山に登ったことある。これから横倉さんとこくぞう山に登るつもりだ。そして、東京にいた時富士山も登ったんだけど、込んでいて火山の石ばっかりの歩く道はあまり好きではなかった。高知県に来てからボルダリングを始めて時々「Stone 0」というジームに行っている。あなたはどんな運動が好きですか？新しいことに興味があるので、教えてくださいね！

The Internet

The Internet is a very important part of my life in Japan.  I use it to keep up with my family and friends in the U.S.A., organize my schedule and lessons, communicate with other ALTs and CIRs in Kochi and elsewhere in Japan, and for fun.  Recently I started recording a podcast about Kochi and teaching English here.  It's all in English, but if you want to have a listen check out http://kochiperspective.blogspot.com.  A podcast is like a radio broadcast over the Internet.  You can also read all of the English versions of this journal at http://hidakaalt.blogspot.com.

Comparison

Because I am from a rural area in Virginia and now live in a rural part of Japan, I often compare them in my mind.  So I thought I would share some differences.  In Japan most wide open spaces are used for rice (left picture) while in Virginia they're either used for hay (right picture), cattle, or left unused.  This makes the countryside look completely different as you can see.  One thing that is very similar are the mountains.  I recently borrowed two books from the library that show lots of hiking courses around the mountains in Kochi.  I'm planning to hike all 100 or so of them during the Summer!

よくバージニア州と高知県を比べている。気づいたことを紹介する。日本ではひろいところはたいてい米を育つために使われているけどバージニア州ではたいてい干し草とか牛の放牧などのために使われている。それでいなかの見た目が上の写真のとおりにだいぶ違う。一つの似ていることは両方は山が多い。最近図書館でハイキングコースがたくさん書いてある本を二冊借りた。すべてのコースをハイキングするつもりです。

The musical is over for now

I spent almost every weekend from February through April practicing for the Tosaben musical.  We had good times and great times.  I learned tons of Tosaben while learning my lines and while listening to everyone else.  Now that its over and I have free time it feels a bit strange.  Thanks to everyone who came to see it and who donated!  We will be able to sponsor two students studying abroad this year.

 二月から四月まですべての土日は土佐弁ミュージカルの練習で過ごした。よかった時もとてもよかった時もあった。たくさんの土佐弁も学べた。今終わったから暇な時はちょっとおかしくて練習するはずの気がするけど、そのはずがもうない。ご覧しました方にも寄付をくださった方にもとても感謝している。今年二人分の海外留学の奨学金出来ると聞いた。

Traveling with my Brother

My brother and three of his friends came to visit Japan recently.  You may have seen them with me in the village while they were here.  We traveled around inside Tokyo city then went to Kyoto.  From there we visited Himeji, Nara, Koyasan, and Osaka.  We ended our trip here in Kochi.  I took them to the waterfalls in Niyodogawa-cho and then we stopped by Yuu no Mori onsen.  I had a lot of fun seeing my brother and visiting many parts of Japan for the first time.

最近お兄さんと友達の三人が訪日した。もしかしたら私達が一緒に村内にいた時見たかもしれません。 日高村に来る前に東京で遊んだりして、京都に行った。あそこから姫路も奈良も大阪も和歌山県の高野山にも行った。最後に高知県に着いた。仁淀川町の滝まで連れて行って湯の森温泉によった。お兄さんと日本のたくさんのところを見ることでよく楽しめた。

Tosaben Musical

These are my first tabi.  They are part of my Okappiki costume for the upcoming Tosaben Musical.  It's a musical performed by Kochi JETs like me (ALTs and CIRs), and it's all performed in Tosa-ben!  I will be in two dances and I have quite a few lines of dialog, but I won't be singing.  Please come see the show, it will run from April 17th to April 25th all throughout the prefecture.

これは僕の始めての足袋 。もうすぐ私が出る土佐弁ミュージカルの岡っ引きの衣装の一部。このミュージカルは高知県のALTとCIR達が土佐弁でパーフォマンスする。僕は二つの踊りをしたり、かなり多い台詞も言ったりしているけど、歌に出ない。ぜひ見にきてください。公演は県内で四月十七日から四月に十五日までの土日に色んな会場で行う。

秋葉祭り

I went to the Akiba festival in Niyodogawa town on February 11th despite the rainy weather.  I'm glad I did!  I parked at the bottom parking lot and enjoyed walking all the way up to the shrine at the top.  It was a nice short little hike and good exercise.  The two most amazing things to me were the pole throwing and the shaking of the portable shrine.  I was also surprised that so many people made the trip out to Niyodogawa town despite the rain.  A lot of the stories meanings of the festivals are very difficult to understand across cultures, but are still very interesting regardless.

二月11日仁淀川町の秋葉祭へ行っちょった。すごい雨が降りよったのにこじゃんと楽しかった。下の駐車場で止めて神社まで登ったことがいい運動だった。長い棒を投げることもお神輿を振ることもあまり信じられなくて、すごかった。それに雨でも場所はとてもにぎやか。こんな祭りの元の話とか、神の話などは文化的なことだから私は分かりにくいのに、おもしろいとおもう。

The Road to Nozu

I love driving to teach class at Nozu Elementary.  It reminds me of the mountain I grew up near.  I finally stopped at the little look-out post and took some pictures.  This is one of them.  I'm enjoying the kotatsu and mikans that come with cold weather in Japan, but I'm looking forward to warm weather again so I can start hiking and enjoying the outdoors more.

野津小学校へ運転する道が好きで、出身の近くにある山の思い出を思い出す。最近その道の横にある展望台で車を止めて写真をとりに行った。左の写真はその時とった。今寒い天気と美味しいみかんで幸せだけど、暖かくて、ハイキングが出来る天気に楽しんでいる。

この写真は夜でとった。この橋は毎日見たものだけど、夜ではちょっと違うと思う。この場所のけいしきのようにSpecialな場所で楽しんで行くことが好き。 もしすばらしい場所をしっちゅうやったらおすすんでください。

I took this photo at night.  It's a different look at a familiar site for all of us that drive through Ino.  I really like finding special places to go and enjoy the scenery, like there by the river at night.  If you have a special place nearby that you like to go, please recommend it to me!  From November 1 to November 30 I'm writing a novel for the first time.  I'm using all of my experiences in Kochi for inspiration.  Beautiful Kochi scenery becomes the setting of the story, people I meet here become personalities.  Hopefully it will turn out alright!

県内旅行 Traveling throughout the Prefecture

私は高知県では、室戸岬や吾北の滝のほかにも東洋町の白浜や四万十市の花火大会や入野浜へも行ったことがある。もうすぐ天狗高原に行くつもりである。足摺岬へ行ったら高知県の東側から西側まで行ったことになる。最近入野浜で初めてサーフィンをしてすごかった。高知で紅葉をこじゃんと見たい。バージニア州のアパラチア山脈には紅葉がすごく美しいので、日高村の紅葉も楽しみです。

So far in Kochi prefecture I've already been to the Muroto cape, the waterfalls in Gohoku, Shirahama beach in Toyo town, the fireworks in Shimanto city, and Irino beach.  I'm planning to visit the Tengu Kougen soon, possibly this weekend.  Once I visit Ashizuri cape I will have been all over the prefecture, from the eastern tip to the western.  I went surfing for the first time recently at Irino beach, it was so much fun!  I'm looking forward to Fall here in Kochi.  The leaves are beautiful this time of year in the Appalachains, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what it's like here.
