Japanese TV Part 2: Celebrities and
Cooking Shows
Happy New Year, everyone! I love
Japanese cooking shows. Your average show features as a guest star the most recent Japanese “celebrity of the week”: a
famous person who falls into obscurity almost as fast as they ascended into the
limelight. The general structure: after being prepared for the most part
off screen, the completed dish is displayed for the camera. The ephemeral star chomps
into the boiling-hot dish. After this first bite, they pause mid-chew for
dramatic effect, before letting loose a robust and elongated cry of “OISHII!!!” as they scoff
it down. I call this “the OISHII moment.” It never fails to send me into
hysterics! While perusing these cooking shows,
I noticed just how many celebrities there are on Japanese TV. Evening TV,
especially, is brimming with them. Television in the U.S. is like this
too, but again, Japan is different in this regard. In Japan it’s very common to
spot, for instance, the exact same celebrity on two or three different cooking
shows airing on two or three different channels. Sometimes all on the same day!
They’re just everywhere!

明けましておめでとうございます！ 今年も宜しくお願い致します！私は日本の料理番組が好きです。日本の料理番組は芸能人がやっていることが多いと気付きました。日本の料理番組は、出来上がった料理をカメラに向けてから、芸能人が食べるというパターンが多いですね。そして、彼らが一口食べて、ひと呼吸置いてから『おいしい！！』と叫んでいます。それがとても面白くて、私のお気に入りの瞬間でもあります。日本のテレビ番組には、どの番組にも芸能人が出ていますね。見ていてとても面白いです。アメリカのテレビ番組も日本と似ていますが、日本の料理番組はアメリカと少し違います。例えば、日本は同じ芸能人がたくさんの違う料理番組に出ています。たまに同じ日に、同じ芸能人が２、３個の違う料理番組に出ているのを見ます。本当に日本の芸能人はどのテレビ番組にも出ていますね。その中でも特に料理番組が多いことに気付きました！ 翻訳；橋本 佳奈
