In May, I planted rice for the first time. I went on a field trip put on by a few college students from Kochi University and their teacher, Professor Gamou. A few students from Kusaka Elementary School came along as well. Nagao-san, Shibuya-san and Yokoyama-san from the Board of Education were also there. Fujita Kachou also came and helped out. The paddy field we went to is in Hidaka VIllage, very close to Yakuba. Since it was my first time participating in rice planting, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. (As is more often than not the case in my day-to-day life here in Japan.) Despite that, it was quite the decompressing experience, relaxing, and yet enthralling.
In order to plant the rice seedlings into the already water-saturated field, it was necessary to climb into the mud, feet first. A some people wore boots, but most folks simply took off their shoes and socks, rolled their pants up to their thighs, and hopped in barefoot (especially the kids). I was definitely of the latter group! Though at first apprehensive toward the initial muddy plunge, within the first three or so minutes of hopping in, I realized how fun it was! I felt like a kid again, albeit a 6 foot 4 inch tall one. All together, we planted the entire field. It didn’t take too long. Unsurprisingly, Shibuya-san was way better at planting rice than I was. He finished planting half the field before I had even planted five rice sprouts. He’s really good at most things, including English. After we finished planting, we went and ate a huge sleep inducing meal together. It was delicious.
今年の5月に、人生初めて田植えをしました。高知大学の蒲生教授とその生徒数名が計画した遠足に、私も参加させてもらいました。日下小学校から生徒が数名参加。教育委員会からは長尾さん、渋谷さんと横山さんが参加。産業環境課の藤田さんも参加しました。今回は、日高村役場のすぐ近くにある田んぼにお世話になりました。田植え経験ゼロの私は、一体何をどうしたらいいのかわからず、、、(まぁ日本に来てから毎日がそんな体験ばかりですが、、、。) 初めはわけがわからなかった田植えも、体験してみると夢中になれ、リラックス効果があるような気がしました。水が張った田んぼに苗を植えるためには、泥の中を歩かなくてはいけません。参加者のうち数人は長靴を用意していましたが、ほとんどはみな裸足になりズボンをまくりあげ田んぼに入っていきました。特に子供達がそうでした。長靴か裸足かって? 私はもちろん裸足組でした! 長靴か裸足かって? 私はもちろん裸足組でした! 泥の感触に慣れるまで3分ぐらいかかりましたが、その後は正午まで子供のように泥の中で楽しい時間を過ごしました。195cmの子供のように、、、全員で苗を植え終わるまでにそんなに時間はかかりませんでした。渋谷さんは本当に器用で英語やその他のことも何でも出来ます。も ち ろ ん 田植えも私より上手でした。彼は私が5つ植えたときに、畑の半分の田植えを終わらせていました。田植えの後は、とても美味しくて 眠りを誘うような 食事をみんなでしました。翻訳；ジョンソン美生
