American Football アメリカンフットボール

It's been a long time since I watched a game of American Football, but Autumn always makes me think of it. American Football has been described as chess played in real time by gladiators in suits of armor. I think that's a pretty good description of it and it explains why I find it fascinating and exciting. I'm sharing the basics of American Football with students at Elementary School this month, I hope everyone has fun!

アメリカンフットボールの試合は何年か見てないが、毎年、秋の頃懐かしく思ってくる。アメリカンフットボールは「鎧を着ているグラディエーターがレアルタイムでするチェス」というように説明されたことがある。その説明の中で私は面白いと思う理由がある。今年の11月は小学校でアメフトを紹介している。生徒の皆が楽しめたらいいなと思っている。

Outdoors in Autumn

October must be my favorite month, the weather is usually good, the sky puts on a beautiful show of clouds, and I no longer have to take three showers a day to feel clean.  It's the perfect time to get to the mountains, or go for a drive along the coast.  This fall I really want to go stargazing at the Tengu Highlands, I heard the night sky is really beautiful from there and you can see the milky way on a clear night.

十月は間違いなく　私の一番好きな月だ。　天気もいいし、雲はすごくきれいな色と形で、そんなに暑くないから気持ちいい。登山や海岸沿いのドライブにばっちり。今年の秋は天狗高原に行って綺麗な夜空を見に行きたいと思っている。天狗高原からみる景色はとても綺麗で、銀河も見えると聞いたから、今からいける日をとても楽しみにしている。

Honeymoon

My wife and I took our honeymoon to America this August.  We spent three weeks traveling along the east coast from North Carolina to New York. We saw my hometown, the Appalachian mountains, the largest mansion in the United States, the nation's capital and almost all of the major memorials and monuments there, the Big Apple in all its glory, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Wall ST, and to top it all off we saw a musical on Broadway, something both of us have always wanted to do.  It was a fantastic time spent with fantastic company.

八月に新婚旅行でアメリカに行っちょった。三週間をかけて、東海岸に沿ってノースカロライナ州からニューヨーク州まで行った。見たのは、私の実家、アパラチア山脈、アメリカの一番大きい屋敷、首都とそこにあるほぼ全部のメモリアル、ニューヨーク、自由の女神、エンパイアーステートビル、セントラルパーク、フィフスアヴェニュー、ウオールストリート、それで、二人ともずっと見たかったブロードウェーのミュージカルも見れた。すごくいい時間を過ごしたし、すごくいい人と一緒に過ごした。

Study Every Week - 毎週勉強する

I took the N1 level Japanese Language Proficiency Test for the second time on July 8th.  Before I took it the first time I had spent a lot of time studying the 2000 daily use kanji.  Before I took it this time I spent a lot of time reading real Japanese documents, books, and newspapers.  I'm not sure if I passed it or not, but that's okay.  The test gives me a good reason to keep studying Japanese every week.

七月の八日に二回め日本語能力試験のレベルN１を受験した。一回目を受ける前に常用漢字の勉強でたくさんの時間を費やした。二回めを受ける前にたくさんの時間を本当の日本語の書類や本や新聞を読むのに費やした。受かったかどうか分からんけんど、どっちにしてもいいや。試験は毎週勉強する刺激になるきね。

Married

I got married on May 24th this year to the wonderful Miu Yano.  We had a ceremony the next day at Umibenokajuen in Konan city.  Our friends, family, coworkers, and some of our students came out to celebrate with us, and we had a wonderful time together with everyone.

今年の５月24日に矢野美生さんと結婚した。翌日香南市の海辺の果樹園で式をあげたがよ。友達、家族、同僚、生徒たちの数人と祝いして、しょう楽しい一日を過ごせたきー、こじゃんと嬉しかった。

The Speed of Life

As it gets warmer and people get more and more active, time seems to fly by sometimes.  We get caught up in our busy spring and summer schedules with events every weekend and our minds are often one step ahead of us.  Unlike spring and summer there aren't as many things going on in Fall, its a time when things are slowing down to a better pace, where we're present, sometimes a little bored, but present.  I think it's even more important now though, in this fast moving part of the year, to remember to slow down and let ourselves catch-up.

人生の速さ
暖かくなって人が活動的になると、時間のスピードが速く過ぎるように感じる。春や夏はイベントがたくさんあって頭がいっぱいになる。秋はイベントが少ないが、時間がゆっくりに感じられる季節だから頭の中がスケジュールに支配されないで時間や季節を一つ一つ確かに感じられる。だから、忙しい春や夏こそ秋のようにゆっくりと落ち着いて過ごせるように心がけることが大事だと思う。

Trains!

Trains.  We don't have a lot of passenger trains in the USA.  The ones we do aren't very convenient.  The first time I road a train was in Italy, the second was in Tokyo.  It wasn't until after that that I road a train in the USA.  I didn't understand them well at first and I was totally afraid of exploring by train.  I'm used to navigating by compass direction and landmarks, so getting on a train and popping out who knows where was quite a difficult transition.  But I've finally (after 5 years) made that transition, and now I've started enjoying exploring cities in Japan by train.  I recently covered most of Osaka and Kobe and am looking forward to taking another shot at Tokyo!

レールでの探険。アメリカは旅客列車はあまり多くない。あるのはあまり便利ではない。初めて電車や列車に乗った時はイタリアへ旅行しに行った時、その次は東京で。その外国での経験の二つの後で、初めてアメリカで乗った。最初はよく分からなくて知らん場所に行くのが怖かった。方角と山みたいな目印でどちらへ行ったらいいか分かるけど、電車や得に地下鉄に乗ってその方角が完全に分からなくなってどこに出たかよく分からない。でも、5年間の練習でやっとなれてきたから、最近大阪と神戸を列車で楽しんで探険できて、8月にもう一回東京でトライしてみようと思っている。
