2014 Tosaben Musical

This years Tosaben Musical combines the stories of Harry Potter and John Manjiro, with some gags and puns and lots of Tosaben! I'm playing Ron, so come out and see me and my fellow ALTs tour the prefecture and do our best speaking Tosaben on stage.

今年のGENKI青年会の土佐弁ミュージカルはハリーポッターとジョン万次郎の話を元にして、ギャグと土佐弁がいっぱい交ざったものです。私はロンの役をするので、私と高知県の他のALTたちを見にきてみーや！

New Years in Tokyo お正月は東京で！

My wife and I went to visit her family living in Tokyo for New Years. I was shocked. Tokyo was so quiet and empty, it was like we arrived in some other city. The trains were comfortable and always had seats for one thing. We went to Yomiuri Land on the 1st, and the park was pretty close to empty. I have to say, if you're looking for something to do during New Years next year, Tokyo is a lot more laid back. On the other hand, a lot of the smaller shops are closed... just like everywhere else. It was nice to get out of Kochi for a change of pace, but I'm glad to be back.

正月に妻と一緒に　 妻の実家、東京に行って、家族で正月を過ごした。東京は　静かで　空いていて、まるで他の町のようで　ビックリした。電車も空いていて、どこに行っても特に込んでいなかった。元日に、読売ランドという遊園地に行った時も、空いてて、たくさんの乗り物に乗れた。もし来年のお正月、時間があれば東京に行くことをおすすめする。もちろん小さい店はしまっていたが、それはどこでもそうだと思う。旅行に行ってリフレッシュできてよかったけど、やっぱり高知に帰ってきて嬉しい！

Holiday Season お祝いの時期

The end and beginning of the year are a time full of celebrations, regardless of your beliefs or religion. People get together with family and make time for each other, or at least more time than normal. For me as a secular American raised in a Christian context I feel a conflict between loving the celebrations and disagreeing with various messages that get passed around. One thing I don't disagree with though, is making time to gather and appreciating what's important to you.

何の宗教でも無宗教でも、年の終わりと始まりはお祝いがたくさん。ほとんどの人にとって、家族のための時間を開けておく時期。キリスト教の回りの人の中で育った無宗教の私にとっては、その祝いの楽しい・好きな所とその祝いの伝わるメッセージの好きじゃないや賛成できない所がよく私の中でぶつかる。そんなぶつかる所があっても、家族や友達と集まって、ちゃんと大切なことを感謝する時間を作ることは心から賛成する。

American Football アメリカンフットボール

It's been a long time since I watched a game of American Football, but Autumn always makes me think of it. American Football has been described as chess played in real time by gladiators in suits of armor. I think that's a pretty good description of it and it explains why I find it fascinating and exciting. I'm sharing the basics of American Football with students at Elementary School this month, I hope everyone has fun!

アメリカンフットボールの試合は何年か見てないが、毎年、秋の頃懐かしく思ってくる。アメリカンフットボールは「鎧を着ているグラディエーターがレアルタイムでするチェス」というように説明されたことがある。その説明の中で私は面白いと思う理由がある。今年の11月は小学校でアメフトを紹介している。生徒の皆が楽しめたらいいなと思っている。

Outdoors in Autumn

October must be my favorite month, the weather is usually good, the sky puts on a beautiful show of clouds, and I no longer have to take three showers a day to feel clean.  It's the perfect time to get to the mountains, or go for a drive along the coast.  This fall I really want to go stargazing at the Tengu Highlands, I heard the night sky is really beautiful from there and you can see the milky way on a clear night.

十月は間違いなく　私の一番好きな月だ。　天気もいいし、雲はすごくきれいな色と形で、そんなに暑くないから気持ちいい。登山や海岸沿いのドライブにばっちり。今年の秋は天狗高原に行って綺麗な夜空を見に行きたいと思っている。天狗高原からみる景色はとても綺麗で、銀河も見えると聞いたから、今からいける日をとても楽しみにしている。

Honeymoon

My wife and I took our honeymoon to America this August.  We spent three weeks traveling along the east coast from North Carolina to New York. We saw my hometown, the Appalachian mountains, the largest mansion in the United States, the nation's capital and almost all of the major memorials and monuments there, the Big Apple in all its glory, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Wall ST, and to top it all off we saw a musical on Broadway, something both of us have always wanted to do.  It was a fantastic time spent with fantastic company.

八月に新婚旅行でアメリカに行っちょった。三週間をかけて、東海岸に沿ってノースカロライナ州からニューヨーク州まで行った。見たのは、私の実家、アパラチア山脈、アメリカの一番大きい屋敷、首都とそこにあるほぼ全部のメモリアル、ニューヨーク、自由の女神、エンパイアーステートビル、セントラルパーク、フィフスアヴェニュー、ウオールストリート、それで、二人ともずっと見たかったブロードウェーのミュージカルも見れた。すごくいい時間を過ごしたし、すごくいい人と一緒に過ごした。

Study Every Week - 毎週勉強する

I took the N1 level Japanese Language Proficiency Test for the second time on July 8th.  Before I took it the first time I had spent a lot of time studying the 2000 daily use kanji.  Before I took it this time I spent a lot of time reading real Japanese documents, books, and newspapers.  I'm not sure if I passed it or not, but that's okay.  The test gives me a good reason to keep studying Japanese every week.

七月の八日に二回め日本語能力試験のレベルN１を受験した。一回目を受ける前に常用漢字の勉強でたくさんの時間を費やした。二回めを受ける前にたくさんの時間を本当の日本語の書類や本や新聞を読むのに費やした。受かったかどうか分からんけんど、どっちにしてもいいや。試験は毎週勉強する刺激になるきね。
